The consumer bears the direct return costs if informed of this in advance. The merchant refunds payments received, including the standard initial delivery cost where applicable, within the statutory period and subject to statutory conditions; the refund may be withheld until the goods or proof of dispatch are received. The consumer is liable for any reduction in value caused by handling beyond what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
